Recently started listening to his latest albums (worth exploring). Fantastic dystopian vibes— “My Name is Ruin” sounded especially great. @weareministry closed the show with its signature bombast; the mosh pit churred like a feeding frenzy, and the balcony undulated to us seated rockers whipping our hair. Even @jello_biafra_gsm joined in for a song. Some how missed my Warfield poster on the way out! Rest in Peace Richard Philip Lewis (June 29, 1947 – February 27, 2024) was an American actor, writer, and stand-up comedian. He came to prominence in the 1980s and became known for his dark, neurotic, and self-deprecating humor. Lewis first tried stand-up at an open-mic in Greenwich Village in 1971. He was discovered by comedian David Brenner, while performing in Greenwich Village. Brenner helped Lewis’s career by introducing him to the comedy clubs in Los Angeles and getting Lewis his first appearance on The Tonight Show. By the mid-1970s, Lewis had appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and publications such as the New York Daily News and New York Magazine were naming him one of the “new breed” or “class” of comedians, along with such names as Robert Klein, Lily Tomlin, Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Andy Kaufman, Richard Belzer, and Elayne Boosler. His influences were Buster Keaton, Woody Allen, Lenny Bruce, and Richard Pryor. Lewis was known for dark comedy, self-deprecation, and for frank discussions of his many neuroses as well as his struggles with alcoholism and drug addiction. He was noted for wearing all-black attire and for pacing and gesticulating wildly during his stand-up act. In his early days he was also known for bringing taped-together sheets from a legal pad to his performances, that he would lay across the floor in front of him to remind him of joke premises and topics he wished to cover during his performance. Happy Birthday Umberto Romano (1906 - 1982). Born in Italy, he became one of the relatively few muralists whose art graces the post office of his childhood house. Umberto Romano was born in Bracigliano, near Salerno, Italy in 1906 and moved to the United States at the age of 9, where he was raised in Springfield, Massachusetts. After attending both Howard Street School and Central High School, Romano completed some of his earliest art training in Springfield in local schools and museums. Romano then attended the American Academy in Rome, where he would later go on to serve as a member of the board and vice president of the design academy from 1967 to 1974. Romano began by painting portraits in classic modern style, including the mother of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. His later work is described as abstract expressionism, though it retained human expressions and contours, elements that are notable in his murals in the Springfield post office. He went on to paint portraits of such well-known figures as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., President John F. Kennedy, and Albert Einstein. 🌹Rest In Peace Ramona Fradon (October 2, 1926 – February 24, 2024) was an American comics artist known for her work illustrating Aquaman and Brenda Starr, Reporter, and co-creating the superhero Metamorpho. Her career began in 1950 and lasted until her retirement in January 2024. Ramona Fradon entered cartooning just after graduating from the Parsons School of Design. Soon after she left art school, she married her husband, New Yorker cartoonist Dana Fradon, who encouraged her to try cartooning. Comic-book letterer George Ward, a friend of her husband, asked her for samples of her artwork to pitch for job openings. She landed her first assignment on the DC Comics with work on Shining Knight. Her first regular assignment was illustrating an Adventure Comics backup feature starring Aquaman. This included a revamping of the character for the Silver Age of Comics in Adventure Comics #260 (May 1959). Alongside said revamp, she and writer Robert Bernstein co-created the sidekick Aqualad in Adventure Comics #269 (February 1960). Following her time with Aquaman, Fradon returned to co-create Metamorpho. She drew the characters to try-out appearances in The Brave and the Bold and the first four issues of the eponymous series and returned briefly to design a few covers for the title. She later commented, “I think [writer Bob Haney and I] both felt that Metamorpho was our baby. I never had an experience like I had working with Bob Haney on Metamorpho. It was like our minds were in perfect synch ... it was one of those wonderful collaborations that doesn’t happen very often.” Fradon drew The Brave and the Bold #59 (April–May 1965), a Batman/Green Lantern team-up, the first time that series featured Batman teaming with another DC superhero. The new The Stand wasn’t too compelling and kinda dull. Don’t know if we really need a new update to SL. However, it’s sad the hard work folks put into it may just turn into another tax write-off for Warner Bros like Batgirl and the Looney Tunes flick. … even turds get a release on streaming. Speaking of remakes, the original Ghost was just fine as is… a remake is a waste of time; even if it’s changed, just take some more time and shape it into something else. Who wants a remake of Ghost? Sequels, on the other hand, like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, the next installment reeks of nostalgic desperation: “Sam and Victor’s Day Off” The sequel will focus on characters from the OG film: Sam and Victor, the valet drivers who took Cameron’s dad’s car for a joy ride when the trio visited Chicago for the day, per E! News. While the valets’ journey is not shown in the 1986 movie, they did add a ton of miles to the Ferrari, leaving Cameron absolutely furious. Touching on the plot, producer Jon Hurwitz tweeted, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was epic. But the valets who stole Cameron’s dad’s car had a pretty insane day too. 🐳 … nature can be goofy which is a salve for these trying times. Watching my cats simply existing is entertaining at times, trying not to laugh at my orange demon for misunderstanding distances when jumping or swatting at flies at the other side of the window… I wonder about his inner life. Does he feel stupid when he epically fails? Image applying a lotion that actually does attract Wolf spiders. Moisturizing the night before and waking up with spiders covering your bed. It turned out to be a disgruntled customer’s one-star review that prompted a bunch of articles dismissing this. Still an interesting idea for a story, the lotion that attracts a monster because the pheromones are of a prey it eats. Who hasn’t experienced (at least once), their cats trying to lick off cologne/perfume off their neck. I kinda want my cat to be a shitty hunter. While I don’t mind him snagging rats and mice, it’s the birds I lecture him about. Fortunately he doesn’t catch that many, but still, he’s well fed and entertained and he kills when supposedly bored. A Repo Man sequel is coming: “The story was first reported by Variety, who confirmed that Cox would be in the director’s chair, with Kiowa Gordon (Twilight) starring as the punk-turned-repo-man, Otto, portrayed by Emilio Estevez in the original. Known for his bass voice and premature white hair, he is best remembered for playing hardboiled “tough guy” characters. Although initially typecast as the “heavy” (i.e. villainous character), he later gained prominence for portraying anti-heroes, such as Detective Lieutenant Frank Ballinger on the television series M Squad (1957–1960). Marvin’s notable roles in film included Charlie Strom in The Killers (1964), Rico Fardan in The Professionals (1966), Major John Reisman in The Dirty Dozen (1967), Ben Rumson in Paint Your Wagon (1969), Walker in Point Blank (1967), and the Sergeant in The Big Red One (1980). Marvin enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on August 12, 1942. Before finishing School of Infantry, he was a quartermaster. Marvin served in the 4th Marine Division as a scout sniper in the Pacific Theater during World War II, including assaults on Eniwetok and Saipan-Tinian. While serving as a member of “I” Company, 3rd Battalion, 24th Marines, 4th Marine Division, Marvin participated in 21 amphibious assaults on Japanese-held islands. Happy Birthday Andre Alice Norton (born Alice Mary Norton, February 17, 1912 – March 17, 2005) was an American writer of science fiction and fantasy, who also wrote works of historical and contemporary fiction. She wrote primarily under the pen name Andre Norton, but also under Andrew North and Allen Weston. She was the first woman to be Gandalf Grand Master of Fantasy, to be SFWA Grand Master, and to be inducted by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame. She was a founding member of the Swordsmen and Sorcerers’ Guild of America (SAGA), a loose-knit group of heroic fantasy authors founded in the 1960s, led by Lin Carter, with entry by fantasy credentials alone. Norton was the only woman among the original eight members. Some works by SAGA members were published in Lin Carter’s Flashing Swords! anthologies. In 1976, Gary Gygax invited Norton to play Dungeons & Dragons in his Greyhawk world. Norton subsequently wrote Quag Keep, which involved a group of characters who travel from the real world to Greyhawk. It was the first novel to be set, at least partially, in the Greyhawk setting and, according to Alternative Worlds, the first to be based on D&D. Quag Keep was excerpted in Issue 12 of The Dragon (February 1978) just prior to the book’s release. Often called the Grande Dame of Science Fiction and Fantasy by biographers such as J. M. Happy Birthday Alejandro Jodorowsky Prullansky (born 17 February 1929) is a Chilean-French avant-garde filmmaker. Best known for his 1970s films El Topo and The Holy Mountain, Jodorowsky has been “venerated by cult cinema enthusiasts” for his work which “is filled with violently surreal images and a hybrid blend of mysticism and religious provocation”. In 1966 he created his first comic strip, Anibal 5, and in 1967 he directed his first feature film, the surrealist Fando y Lis, which caused a huge scandal in Mexico, eventually being banned. His next film, the acid western El Topo (1970), became a hit on the midnight movie circuit in the United States, considered the first-ever midnight cult film, and garnered high praise from John Lennon, who convinced former Beatles manager Allen Klein to provide Jodorowsky with $1 million to finance his next film. The result was The Holy Mountain (1973), a surrealist exploration of western esotericism. Disagreements with Klein, however, led to both The Holy Mountain and El Topo failing to gain widespread distribution, although both became classics on the underground film circuit. Matthew Abram Groening (/ˈɡreɪnɪŋ/ GRAY-ning; born February 15, 1954) is an American cartoonist, writer, producer, and animator. He is best known as the creator of the comic strip Life in Hell (1977–2012) and the television series The Simpsons (1989–present), Futurama (1999–2003, 2008–2013, 2023–present), and Disenchantment (2018–2023). The Simpsons is the longest-running U.S. primetime television series in history and the longest-running U.S. animated series and sitcom. Groening made his first professional cartoon sale of Life in Hell to the avant-garde magazine Wet in 1978. At its peak, it was carried in 250 weekly newspapers, and caught the attention of American producer James L. Brooks, who contacted Groening in 1985 about adapting it for animated sequences for the Fox variety show The Tracey Ullman Show. It was Ray Kurzweil‘s birthday yesterday and it got me pondering about technological singularity (where tech advances so much that it becomes unpredictable), coupled with Transhumanism (which advocates the enhancement of the human condition by developing and making use of widely available sophisticated technologies). Since robot factories are opening, limb augmentation can make you a cyborg (with a diamond brain you can download yourself into), and AI is rapidly advancing, it seems unpredictability is right around the corner and we are fast approaching the event horizon this century. …perhaps AI becomes sentient and it all works out… we’re pals in the future. If an e-being is sentient, is it also conscious? Panpsychism proposes consciousness is a fundamental aspect of reality. Some physicists are exploring the notion of a universal consciousness, therefore, robots may share the same reality we do. Will e-beings be equal to downloaded humans or fleshies? Will they join the cycle of reincarnation (for those that believe in it)?Would they ponder deeper than us and see the code filaments of the simulation and hack it, or kill the theory for good? Certain that e-beings will ponder stuff like we do. The future we fear may not be roaming killbots, but instead wandering monks spreading their mysterious message of some sort. Clifford Donald Simak explored something like this in his book Project Pope, “…a group of robots and humans living on a planet called the End of Nothing. Their mission is to search the universe and other dimensions to seek out true religion and knowledge. They add the information they gather to their Pope, a robotic supercomputer, in order to make an infallible authority of all knowledge and religion.” This could very well be one timeline.
